About

Sam Legzdin

I’m currently in my second year studying a bachelor of Music Education majoring in performance for classical saxophone at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

In 2020 I travelled to London and was the music and art assistant at a Blackheath High School. Covid halted my year abroad and I returned to Australia after 3 months. Fortunately, I acquired a position at Geelong Grammar School’s Timbertop Campus where I was the music “gappie”. This role was extremely challenging, yet the overall experience really concreted my interest of music education as the Head of Music there encouraged me to pursue this.

I completed my HSC at Nowra Anglican College and was in various school bands and choirs and became really close with the performing arts department as a result. When I was House Captain I found a love for teaching music through House Songs and chants. Watching my music teacher interact and engage both courses inspired me greatly especially as my year 12 class had a combined Music 2 and Music 1. That year, I was Mrs Potts in the school musical which enabled me to interact more with the staff, in addition to expressing my own interests and ideas which were implemented into the final production. I was granted the role of the Performing Arts Prefect in year 12 where this passion of teaching music grew.

I want to be a music educator because I love music and want to engage and encourage other people through music. Music should be an outlet of joy and an escape from reality. Music is so diverse and there are elements within it suitable for everyone. I want to make people love music as much as I do, it’s what binds our humanity.
